獵人搗毀了偷雞吃的狐狸Vixen的窩，

俘虜了小狐狸Tip，用鐵鏈把它拴在院子裏。

夜裏，Vixen來救它的孩子了。它一次次叼起Tip往回拖，

但是，當鐵鏈拉直時，Tip就會被扯痛，

於是，Vixen便用牙齒去啃咬鐵鏈，無濟於事後又挖坑，

把鐵鏈收到坑裏埋上（它以爲這樣鐵鏈就不存在了）

，結果Tip還是被鐵鏈扯住了。

連續四個晚上，Vixen都冒著被獵人的子彈打中的危險，

和被獵狗追咬的危險，來給孩子送吃的，

並努力想救走Tip。到了第五個晚上——

Vixen像個黑影兒似地跑來，待了一會兒，

又無聲無息地走掉了。Tip呢，一口咬住了它扔下來的一樣東西，

津津有味地大吃大嚼起來。

可是，就在它吞咽的時候，一股刀紮似的劇痛刺透了它的全身，

痛得它禁不住失聲大叫起來。

接著，小傢夥又掙扎了一陣子，就躺在地上永遠不動了……

poison bait, and would have taught him had he lived to know and

shun it too. But now at last when she must choose for him a
